Bring the Beat back 013

Ever since the CD player in my car finally failed, I have begun to appreciate more music, although David Rushing has been another means to this goal, the radio is my main source. After the meeting of the Anime Club of JCCC, today I returned to the 75th Street Brewery, where I have not been in a month.

  • The Carlsen Center lower west lot will be closed between noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11.

  • 42 parking spaces in the lower Regnier Center garage will be closed between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.”

In 2004, after Denton’s previous improv troupe “Betty Ford’s First Project” was disbanded, I took in an improv show at the Carlsen Center, part of the Performing Arts Series at Johnson County Community College. That troupe had done their homework, which led to cheers from the audience:

“Thank you for staying with NPR on KCUR, and not tuning to The Rock.”

By Dire Straits, “Sultans of Swing” ended before I had realized that I had tuned from 98.9 The Rock! to Alice 102. I might take off tomorrow from my blog.

My day at work was not too bad, and I felt fantastic after an afternoon nap! Alice 102 provided the perfect soundtrack for my trip to the 75th Street Brewery, my first visit since last month. Crowded House were performing “Something So Strong” on 105.1 JACK FM en route to Jazz A Louisiana Kitchen.

Sorry, y‘all, no political diatribe today, and even after I read, “The Mountain, the Manx, the BRZ and how I learned to love racing,” somehow I thought that Mazda above was a product of Subaru of America, Inc.

As perfect a Thursday 008

Thursday, I awoke earlier than Friday, yet I still left home at about the same time. Friday morning, according to Kansas City’s Morning News, the sky-way’s jammed; two injurious accidents slowed traffic on south-bound I-35, so I wisely took an alternate route, and found breakfast at McDonald’s.

On Thursday, I took my car to Waterway® Gas & Wash Company and had the interior cleaned. As a consequence of that action, my payment to Citibank will be another thirty days late. On Friday, I skipped the meeting of the Anime Club of JCCC, and I took advantage of this offer at the 75th Street Brewery. After a nap, I met my sisters and some of their friends at Arby’s. Later, at the home of Denton, we watched the German film 7 Zwerge, which is 7 Dwarves in English, is available on Netflix, and is honestly the most funny thing that I am seen in much time.

I don’t know, do you 021

Due to my insistence on minute accuracy, as I revealed in Egocentric Universe: You can walk or deny 020, I may often lose sight of the main issues, and be concerned only for the details, which can often assume undue importance.

How could I not author any post in this series for so long, since Egocentric Universe: I don’t know, do you 020? I today wonder if my making sure that I did not post after midnight was worth my being tired this morning, yet I am not entirely sure if I was not this morning experiencing a diabetic low, something important.

QuikTrip right now has a special; one can have any Minute Maid juice product for free if one buys any breakfast sandwich, which is something that I do everyday anyway. Please note that I have type 2 diabetes, which is increasingly diagnosed yet does not require injections of insulin. I don’t know, sometimes feel like a stranger in my own life, a reference to one of four songs, which I know and therefore like, by Sheryl Crow.

I might Tuesday have no visit to the 75th Street Brewery; I am unsure if I can afford to this week. Tomorrow is the primary election, and I participated in canvassing and making some calls. Even though this blog, and computers from this era, will be unreadable to archeologists in two hundred years, I want to be sure that the record is correct. I don’t know, do you?

I yesterday said that I might today have no visit to the 75th Street Brewery in order to take advantage of a few freebies to get through Tax Day; I likely will not. While my mother was willing to drive my sister out to the College this morning, I awoke to my alarm, without enough time to go to Bruegger’s before work, and I am still waiting on my tax refund, so I really can not spare money, which is better used for Hot Pockets.

Of course, I will be at the 75th Street Brewery and the Roving Imp Training Center later today; however, once I have my tax refund, I will go to Superior Chevrolet, a Kansas City dealer, to have my car serviced, and such is a ritual for me in the most wonderful time of the year.

Summary of Improv Goals 012

Fortunately, I was at the Roving Imp Training Center, so I did not watch the State of the Union address. In class last night, we worked on the goal for the long form: to use motion to develop and play a character.

At the 75th Street BreweryKC drinker says, “Bar food [is] taken to the next level,” and Rachel in the bar area is always a truly excellent server, but I was delayed in leaving, so I was a little later than usual for the full class (i.e., ten openings were available and we had ten students), thus I began my class with an off feeling.

We were first in a circle, and one person suggested a celebrity, another person suggested an emotion and a third person suggested a location; this exercise is otherwise known as a Celebrity-Emotion-Location Circle.

The following celebrities were among the suggested: Katherine Hepburn; John Wayne at a Taco Bell; the ashamed man, after whom Gettysburg was named, at the Appomattox Courthouse; and Jimmy Stewart. For Stewart, David had the best voice, facial expression, and physicality; Steve A was a close second; and John and I both made reference to It’s a Wonderful Life.

OK OK OK, some of those suggestions might have been for a round of Celebrity-Location Circle, for which we each had a different emotion.

Following these exercises, we individually went on stage and silently acted out ninety seconds of a typical morning before we would leave home for our days.

If my sister Kimberly had been in the audience, she would likely have recognized that I first mimed coming to the top of the stairs and knocking on her door. Because so many scenes had already featured a sink in a bathroom, I abbreviated the motion of combing my hair. As well as my digging and grasping for Hot Pockets, I could have mimed the large, vertical freezer a little better.

John, our creative director, in both title and nuisance, noticed that most of us needed to slow down our motions, especially our hands, so that objects were clearly understood by the audience.

The next exercise was not specifically called Wake Up, but each of the five pairs of players started from a sleep, used no words and only motion to develop a character and relationship, and were allowed to speak after forty-five seconds had elapsed.

If I am honest, which I do try to be, I think that my focus was more involved in the mechanics of portraying my waking up than on the goal for those forty-five seconds. Emotion was somewhat discernible in my performance, but neither my character nor our relationship was, so John stopped Greg and I at certain points.

I deeply value and appreciate the style that John uses for instruction, despite that way that the following might sound. To say that neither my ego nor pride was deeply wounded one of those times, would be a denial of my true feelings.

My thoughts turned to leaving the class; such would have not just made me appear immature, or be disruptive to the class, but would also be contrary to all the work done in my therapy. I just decided that I would be as emotionally hurt the next time was on stage. Following my silent and mental resolve, Joel likely did something funny and I laughed.

In the final set of scenes, each of us chose the person, and therefore character, with whom we would like to play. I chose Frank, who played a nonspeaking but supportive dog “Dog,” who had been under-utilized. Also, I have another confession: I had not changed into my stage pants because I did not leave myself enough time to go home and so do.

We closed the session with a few line games.

You can walk or deny 015

Fortunately, I will be at either the 75th Street Brewery or the Roving Imp Training Center, so I will not be watching.
