A friend is traveling to Kansas to visit his mother and to allow her to visit other relatives. I only borrowed title to the 2000 DreamWorks motion picture with this in mind; he is somewhat like the Spanish conquistadors of old, Cortez or de Soto, who found themselves somewhere near Kansas.
In truth, I am helping Ronni to transport herself and goods and a place to display those goods to De Soto’s Summer Bash. When I had left everything off there, it seems she had forgotten her external extended battery, so I made another trip to De Soto where she was coordinating the vendors.

Yes, my puns can be terrible. Instead of saying, “in the vaguest sense,” well, you see the title.
Traffic on the way to work was flowing too smoothly which means things were probably going too good, then again I often mistake an air of Destiny, in the Vegas sense, for Impending Doom. I had made a few errors yet found out about a new opportunity.
“I love you, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield,
and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalms 18:1-2)”

Much time has passed since any entry in this series, and I have seen no live improv in almost two months. Saturday, Ham Kitty is playing again and JH Design is having an opening.
‘Songspot’ is an improv game where someone in the center of a circle starts a song, when another player has a song, and they tag in. Objectively, the idea is to think of a song before the person in the center has ‘suffered’ too long.
I was kind of put on the spot tonight. Sometimes I’m reminded of a song by a few words someone says, but a song of my choosing, and not a song by a specific artist; a frailty was exposed. I was vanquished and not in the good Aston Martin way. My ego is bruised.
‘The important thing in life is not victory but combat;
it is not to have vanquished…’

“L’esprit de l’escalier or l’esprit d’escalier (literally, staircase wit) is a French term used in English that describes the predicament of thinking of the perfect comeback too late.”
I have been challenged to ‘learn the ways of the people,’ The All-American Rejects; Winger; and Jimmy Eat World, with whom some of my friends say they attended high school.
The status update, a few days later,
from my step-grandfather summarized Saturday better than I could:
June had her 90th Birthday Saturday and all her family came: 3 sons and her daughter and two grandsons and one with his lady friend with her boy and girl. They each came from different states. June said that although it was the greatest birthday party she ever had but now at 90 yrs young she said she could not stand the stress of another one at home. She said the Buffet Resturant is a whole lot less stressful.
With everyone at the house, Uncle Ricky and Aunt Velma began to grill steak, grass-fed Angus. Velma had also cut up watermelon and strawberries and made coleslaw and potato salad. My father took over the grilling of the steak, and others who preferred their steak more rare took turns. Velma then grilled some burgers which were set aside later for supper.
My cousin Mandy who works at Whole Foods and made one of the two cakes which were brought: The first was made of two sheets of whole grain cake mix topped with a thin layer of chocolate Swiss buttercream icing and separated by chocolate ganache; The second, circular chocolate cake was even more decadent, I’m told.

“It’s been a long road, getting from there to here,” I’ve been over the moon,
resigned to certain facts, and in denial, “Hard to Say Anything,” really.
“But you were with another man,” with whom I have shared an inside joke (whose imagined consequences I have been dreading this weekend) and who is a cool brother to a gentleman who sits across from me. Grand gestures are no way to win someone’s affection; that’s the lesson.
